Mariners Had A Chance To Steal Triston Casas But Refused To Eat The Masataka Yoshida Contract

I have no idea what’s wrong with Jerry Dipoto but he had an opportunity to rob Craig Breslow by stealing away Triston Casas but passed. Not just once either. MULTIPLE TIMES!!!

I also don’t know how nobody has choked Breslow yet but that’s a story for another day.

The Red Sox and Mariners were in trade talks revolving around Luis Castillo. The Red Sox offered Triston Casas in return if they would also take on Masataka Yoshida. Seattle declined. Boston then pivoted to signing Walker Buehler.

VIA Mark Feinsand of MLB.com

“The Sox did just that, sending a four-player package led by Kyle Teel to the White Sox for Garrett Crochet, who is under club control for two more seasons before he reaches free agency. Boston remained in the market for another starter, with Seattle’s Luis Castillo among its targets, but according to sources, the Mariners wanted Triston Casas back in a trade, something the Red Sox were unwilling to do unless Seattle took back Masataka Yoshida, who has three years and $55.8 million remaining on his contract.”

“Once it became clear that a Castillo deal wasn’t going to happen, the Red Sox turned back to the free-agent market, inking Walker Buehler to a one-year, $21.05 million deal that includes another $2.5 million in incentives.”

Yoshida, 31, has $55.8 million remaining on his contract lasting three more seasons. If that doesn’t tell you how little value he has around the league, I don’t know what does.

It seems like Seattle was only willing to move on from Castillo if they could shed his contract. Frankly, I’m not sure why Boston couldn’t figure out a way to just take the deal on without having to include Casas but it likely has everything to do with them being cheap. Trust me, if I were running the Red Sox, I would have gotten this deal done and Cooper Criswell and Josh Winckowski would have been sent to Seattle in return.

Unfortunately, that’s not the world we live in. Instead, loser nerd Breslow is in charge and has proven he doesn’t have a clue what he’s doing. It’s absolutely criminal he’s tried to give Casas away. The guy belongs in prison for that.
