Manchester United have begun their pursuit of Chelsea’s Mason Mount.
United submitted a £40 million bid for the English midfielder on Wednesday. The bid was immediately rejected, with Chelsea expecting a much higher fee for their former academy graduate.

Chelsea have rejected the proposal, as per @Matt_Law_DT. No plan to accept £40m fee for Mount.

The two clubs are apparently a ways apart in their valuation of Mount. According to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth, Chelsea want a transfer fee of around £70 million.
Since Manchester United started the bidding at £40 million, Sheth does not believe they will be willing to pay more than £55 million for Mount.
While it may seem as if Chelsea would reject all moves for Mount considering the disparity between the two clubs’ valuations, Manchester United is the team that holds the power here.
Mount only has one year left on his contract. While Chelsea wants him to renew his contract with the club, an agreement has yet to be reached. If he wants to leave and Chelsea rejects all transfer offers for him this summer, then there is a chance that he could leave on a free transfer next summer.
There are also no other clubs currently bidding for Mount, meaning there is no motivation for United to up their bid at the moment.
Chelsea could find themselves in a precarious situation if they hold out for too long. Manchester United is also considering other midfield options, including Moisés Caicedo and Declan Rice. If no agreement can be reached with Chelsea, United will likely turn to these other options.
While United’s interest in Mount is genuine, their main priority right now is to sign a striker. Although the club was initially trying to sign Harry Kane, a move for the English striker looks incredibly unlikely now. The club is now looking at Rasmus Højlund and Randal Kolo Muani as alternatives.
With United looking at other transfer options this summer, they are unlikely to be willing to overspend on Mason Mount. It will be interesting to see if Chelsea chooses to roll the dice or if they try to cash out while they can.
