Manchester City Seeks To Bring Gündoğan Back To Club

According to ESPN, Manchester City are among the clubs interested in signing German midfielder İlkay Gündoğan from Barcelona.

This news comes just a year after the 33-year-old left City to move to the Catalan giants. Despite being a key player for Barcelona last season and making 51 appearances for the club, Gündoğan now finds his position with the club under threat following the arrival of Spanish international Dani Olmo.

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick still wants Gündoğan at the club after bringing in Olmo. However, according to Fabrizio Romano, he has agreed to let Gündoğan leave the club on a free transfer even though he still has two years left on his contract, greenlighting a return to Manchester if the German wants.

Gündoğan is also getting interest from other clubs across Europe and Saudi Arabia, including Cristiano Ronaldo‘s Al Nassr. However, a reunion with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City seems like the most likely outcome considering Gündoğan’s praise for the Spanish manager following his departure from the club and the success he achieved while he was in Manchester.

In a seven-year stint with City, he made over 300 appearances for the club and won five Premier League titles. He also helped City win its first-ever Champions League title before leaving for Barcelona.

Bringing Gündoğan back to the club makes sense for City, not only for his history with the club but also because Guardiola’s side is looking for another midfielder following Kalvin Phillips‘s loan move to newly-promoted Premier League side Ipswich Town. City is also looking to sign a new forward before the end of the window following Julián Álvarez‘s move to Atletico Madrid earlier this summer and Oscar Bobb‘s injury, which will keep the Norwegian on the sideline for over three months.
