Leading into the 2022 NFL Draft, LIberty QB Malik Willis had projections all over the board. Some mocks had him going as high as #2 overall to the Lions, or as low as the mid to late 20s. Willis was viewed as a first-round pick, but that did not turn out to be the case as he was picked 86th overall by the Tennessee Titans. The Titans already have their QB1, for this season, in Ryan Tannehill so this now brings up an interesting question: how should Malik Willis be viewed in terms of fantasy football? Well, let me explain.
Barring a major injury to Tannehill or this Titans team being clearly out of the playoff race, I do not foresee Willis hitting the field this season. So, this means that for the upcoming fantasy football season, Willis is not likely to bring you any sort of value, no matter where you draft him. But, depending on what kind of league you are in, drafting Malik Willis might be wise.
I believe that Willis only has value if you are in a Dynasty league. Think about it. Tannehill plays this entire year. After this year, he is not guaranteed to be on the team in 2023, leaving the door open for Willis to take over the QB1 job. You can’t deny the fact that Willis has a ton of upside and has a lot of tools that should excite you, but he needs time to develop into a true NFL quarterback. Sitting for a full year should do the trick (even if Tannehill won’t mentor him).
If you want to be daring, be my guest to draft Malik Willis in a regular fantasy football league. But, if you are in need of a quarterback for a dynasty league, I think Willis would be a steal of a pickup. Consider him a draft-and-stash like the NBA.
