The Orlando Magic are officially turning the corner on their rebuild and paid a heavy price to do so. Desmond Bane is on his way to Disney World, and the Magic gave up a haul to make this trade happen.
Memphis is sending Bane to Orlando in exchange for a boatload of draft picks, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and Cole Anthony.
Shams Charania of ESPN was the first to report the news:
Bane, 26, averaged 19.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game last season for Memphis. Since being selected in the first round of the 2020 NBA Draft, he’s also been one of the best three-point shooters in the NBA too.
The Grizz cash in on a whooper of a draft haul here. Memphis picks up the 16th selection in this year’s draft, along with Phoenix’s first-round pick in 2026 and unprotected first-rounders from Orlando in 2028 and 2030. That’s not including a 2029 swap as well.
When you factor in the contract, Bane isn’t exactly on a cheap salary here either. It feels exactly like the type of trade you can’t make with these new rules. The Magic new starting five will consist of Bane, Jalen Suggs, Franz Wagner, Paolo Banchero, and Wendell Carter.
By the way, Orlando is now hard capped after this trade and will be a second apron team. That means a Magic team that was a 7 seed, will now be expected to be a legitimate contender to win the Finals. I’m not sure this team is capable of that, but it was an admirable swing nevertheless.
