Mac Jones Potentially Being Shopped in a Trade by Bill Belichick

It seems as though Mac Jones’ offensive frustrations from last season are still lingering in New England. Bill Belichick has reportedly been inquiring about a trade for Jones with multiple teams this offseason.

Jones’ frustration seemed to boil over in an ugly Week 13 loss against division rival Buffalo. He appeared to yell “throw the f***ing ball” in the direction of “offensive coordinator” Matt Patricia. The Patriots listed Patricia as the senior football advisor and offensive line coach last season, yet he was the main play caller for the team’s offense in 2022.

The Joe Judge and Matt Patricia offensive experiment in 2022 did not produce good results. New England’s play-calling became borderline hard to watch as the season progressed. After achieving a 6-4 record, the Patriots went on to lose five out of their last seven games, leading to them missing playoffs for the second time in three seasons. From a fan perspective, the frustration of Mac Jones and why was obvious and not unwarranted.

Problems between Jones and Belichick began after the quarterback reached out to his alma mater for help and advice on the situation. The exact individual Jones reached out to is not known, but his decision to do was seen as disloyal by Belichick nonetheless. Clearly so much so that the New England head coach is actively trying to move on from Jones at quarterback.

With draft day approaching soon, a trade between the Patriots and another team for Mac Jones will likely happen between now in then if it is going to happen at all.

What Teams Could be Interested in Jones?

It is not every day that a quarterback of Mac Jones’ caliber becomes potentially available. The Raiders, Texans, Buccaneers and Commanders are the possible trade destinations at the moment via Pro Football Talk. All four teams would elevate their quarterback rooms massively if they were able to to trade for Jones.

Belichick would be taking a very large gamble if he is truly set on shopping Jones to another team.

Entering his third year, Jones has earned the respect of many of his piers in New England, one of which is future hall of fame safety, Devin McCourty. The newly retired McCourty called Jones, “the future of New England” in an interview with Good Morning Football.

While that may not be the case anymore, Jones is still a viable starting quarterback that has room to improve. Multiple teams would be stupid not to pursue Jones, the same way they are stupid for not pursuing Lamar Jackson.
