Maalik Murphy Transfers To Duke

Riley Leonard might be leaving the program, but that doesn’t mean that Duke just sat on their hands. In fact, they may have even found an upgrade in the process. Former Texas signal caller Maalik Murphy is heading to Duke to complete a transfer to the Blue Devils.

The Inglewood, California native made the announcement that he was transferring to Duke via Instagram.

“This time around I’ma make it clear.”
“106% Committed.”

This is a huge get for Duke. I don’t think it takes a rocket scientist to figure that part out. Murphy has three years remaining of eligibility and is built like a house. Murphy checks in at 6-foot-5, 238, with a rocket arm. He’s still a raw prospect but this sort of player rarely lands at Duke. This is not a program that routinely lands highly rated four-star quarterbacks.

Manny Diaz getting the job here certainly had to help. Losing Mike Elko could have been a serious blow to this program. Instead, they replace Elko with another solid defensive mind while bringing in a quarterback with a higher upside. Duke isn’t just a basketball school anymore. The football program has become very respectable over the years.

Quinn Ewers was the starter for Texas this past year but Murphy did get some playing time while he was hurt. Murphy started the BYU and Kansas State game. On the season, Murphy threw for 477 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions. He’s still incredibly raw but clearly talented.
