You heard me. The Los Angeles Chargers are going to contend for a Super Bowl. The same Chargers who went 7-9 in 2020 (while firing their head coach in the middle of the season) will contend for the Lombardi trophy in 2021.

Offseason Moves And Existing Talent Make The Los Angeles Chargers Super Bowl Contenders

The most obvious reason is QB Justin Herbert. After winning OROY in 2020, Herbert has been consistently solid for the Chargers. From trucking linebackers to making key plays, Herbert is one of the best QBs in the NFL. The Chargers also addressed their horrible offensive line by drafting Rashawn Slater with the 13th pick in the draft. This pick is huge for the Chargers because the offensive line limited Herbert’s play last year and he will surely improve with a rejuvenated o-line.

Having a solid QB is certainly important, but having proficient pass-catchers is important as well, and it is in this area that the Chargers really shine. The Chargers have strong pass-catchers, including Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, and Austin Ekeler (a fantasy must-have despite an injury-riddled 2020). The Herbert–Allen connection was great all of 2020, and if Ekeler can be a productive dual-threat weapon, the Chargers’ offense is even more promising.

Lastly, the Los Angeles Chargers hired Brandon Staley, former defensive coordinator of the Rams. In Staley’s time with the Rams, they were first in defensive efficiency, points and yards allowed per game, and defensive touchdowns, so the defense should be dangerous under Staley’s guidance.

The Chargers took many positive strides this offseason. With the combination of these moves and the existing talent the Chargers have, they will be in the Super Bowl discussion in 2021.
