Barcelona And Lionel Messi Agree To 5 Year Extension

Well, Barcelona fans, you can breathe a sigh of relief. Lionel Messi isn’t going anywhere. Instead, he is agreeing to a 5 year deal with FC Barcelona. While Barcelona’s financial problems seemed to make the extension difficult, Messi agreed to a wage cut to stay with the club. Messi’s contract expired on June 30th, making him a free agent. Both PSG and Manchester City were interested in Messi, but no deal went down.

Re-signing Lionel Messi Makes Barcelona’s Future Much Brighter

Messi’s wage reduction is vital for Barcelona’s future. Huge debt combined with a wave of new signings meant Barcelona’s financial future wasn’t looking good. But the wage cut allows for new signings, including Sergio Aguero and Memphis Depay, to sign with the club. However, this means the expensive Antoine Griezmann might be leaving Barcelona, as Barcelona has just offered a swap deal involving him to Atletico Madrid.

After an 8-2 champions league loss to Bayern Munich, Messi wanted to leave Barcelona. However, Barca’s president Josep Maria Bartomeu resigned, paving the way for Laporta to return. Laporta has always been close to Messi and his family, so Messi decided to run it back with Barcelona.

Currently, Messi is on vacation celebrating a well-deserved Copa America championship run. But once Messi rejoins the club, Barcelona will have a lot of weapons in their squad. Messi’s re-signing gives Barcelona the centerpiece to continue to build around, and now it’s on Barcelona management to do exactly that.

Finally, an end to the drama. Barcelona has eased the hearts of their fans with the extension of Messi. But the work isn’t done yet. If they fail to support Messi as they have in the past, then Lionel Messi -along with Barcelona fans- might leave the club forever.
