Liam Hendriks undergoes Tommy John surgery

It was announced Wednesday that Liam Hendriks underwent successful Tommy John surgery to repair a torn ligament in his elbow.

This guy just cannot catch a break. In case you were living under a rock, Hendriks was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma back in January. I’m certain it was a very scary time for him and his family, but the entire MLB community was behind him.

Thankfully, he responded extremely well to treatment and announced his remission in April. The White Sox reinstated Hendriks to the roster just a month later. His return to MLB arrived on May 29, in which he received a standing ovation and much more.

But his return to baseball was unfortunately short-lived as Hendriks would almost immediately go on the IL with elbow inflammation. That inflammation leads up to the present where Hendriks just underwent Tommy John surgery. It’s just a rough stretch for the guy.

Overall, Hendriks’ journey has been a heartwarming story that everybody can get behind. You simply couldn’t not root for the guy, even if you weren’t a White Sox fan. Sure, he wasn’t playing up to his usual elite-level standards, but hell, the guy had a chance of dying just earlier this year. The fact he was even on the field was a miracle in itself.

Nevertheless, collectively, the White Sox remain one of the more disappointing teams this year. Still, it would have been cool to at least see Hendriks on the mound every now and then.

I’m truly wishing Hendriks a speedy recovery and hope to see him back out on the mound in 2025.
