LeBron James Should Play On Minimum Contracts The Rest Of His Career

I’m not really into the GOAT talk. LeBron James is the most physically gifted athlete of my life. He’s sure as hell not the greatest basketball player of all time. That recognition goes to someone who doesn’t have period cramps because things got too hard in the Finals against Dallas. Now that we got that out of the way, let’s talk about what should matter for LeBron heading down the back 9 of his career.

The new CBA sucks. It’s not the worst thing ever but there are so many rules that I despise. The bottom line is if LeBron wants to actually be part of a title contender again, he needs to sign minimum contracts for the remainder of his career.

Can we just be honest? Two things can be true; what LeBron is doing on the court at his age is incredible, but there is no denying he’s not the same guy anymore. He can be for two minute stretches but he’s not the bowling ball of hell he used to be. It just is what it is.

The Lakers will be competitive this year but they won’t make it out of the West. Maybe if LeBron was five years younger, but it’s not happening with this current version of him. Denver showed last year that the Lakers aren’t in their class and won’t be as LeBron continues to age. The same thing is going to happen the following year if LeBron wants to accept his $51+ million player option for the 2024-25 NBA Season when he will be 40.

If LeBron wants to keep playing after that, it has to be for the minimum or he’s really just wasting his time other than collecting stats. The days of LeBron being the biggest cap hit on a championship team are over. It is what it is. He shouldn’t be at this age.

LeBron is going to have to have an honest conversation with himself. Even at 40, 41, 42, he can still really help a team. If he fights for every dollar in the future, he’s only wasting his time. The new CBA won’t allow him to really compete for hardware if he does.

Would he sign with the Heat on a minimum and try to get them over the top again? Would he sign with the Warriors on the minimum and try to lift a trophy with Steph Curry? That’s the kind of stuff he needs to be thinking about. If another max deal is on his mind, he’s really wasting his time other than collecting more checks and stats. If LeBron really wants to impact his legacy, the minimum contracts should be his new reality.

LeBron has more money than god and when he does he can’t take it with him. Everything now should be about legacy. LeBron can still impact the game but he can do it on a much larger scale if he’s not greedy about it.
