LeBron James: Participating in Slam Dunk Contest is ‘not a goal of mine’

LeBron James is regarded by some as the best player of all time with an all-time great resume, but James is certainly missing one thing from his resume. That is a Slam Dunk championship, and James says that participating in a Slam Dunk contest is “not a goal of his.”

In a recent interview, James spoke about his potential of participating in the Slam Dunk content.

(All quotes via theScore.)

“I don’t think it was something I wanted to accomplish in my career; it’s not a goal of mine and it never was coming into the NBA to be a part of the Dunk Contest, you know?” he said. “Making the NBA All-Star Team was, being the league MVP, winning Defensive Player of the Year, winning NBA Championships … THOSE were some goals of mine. The NBA Dunk Contest was NEVER a goal of mine so, it wasn’t something that I had too much passion for.”

In the past, James has piqued interest in participating in the big event, specifically in 2009, but wouldn’t follow his word and back out.

Only three years later would James officially rule out ever competing in the contest, saying he was “getting too old” and would want to prevent injury. But, now James is 38-years-old, still thriving and is throwing down monstrous dunks for the Lakers.

James finished the season on an impressive run with the Lakers. James stringed together 11 straight 20-point games, including ending the season on a 40-point game, shooting 60 percent from the field.

Although participating in a Slam Dunk Contest is of little concern to James right now, the former No. 1 overall pick has considered retiring from the league.
