Even though he’s still a one-of-a-kind specimens on the basketball court, LeBron James, who will turn 40-years-old in December, has never been shy about his love for sports beyond just playing the game.
One of the most prominent sports that he’s always been a fan of was football; he even teamed up with DraftKings in January for weekly NFL picks. In a recent interview on the Gojo and Golic podcast with Mike Golic Jr. and Mike Golic Sr., James was asked about being a potential broadcaster in the future. His response was coy, but appeared open to the idea when that part of his life arrives:
“You know, I don’t know. I definitely love the sport,” James said. “I love basketball, I love football. And I watch it not only as a fan but also just breaking down matchups, just things of that nature. I was brought into sports. When you grow up in Northeast Ohio, listen, you grow up in sports. It would be great. I see Tom Brady doing it. He’s been great so far. And, we will see. Even if it’s just a guest appearance. You know, one game or two, when I’m done playing.
“But it’s always fun to give back to the game. The game has given me so much. So if it’s basketball, if it’s football, if it’s whatever — I love the word sport because it’s given so much to me and my family. And it’s only right I give back to it.”
James has unparalleled knowledge when it comes to the game of basketball and all the different intricacies knotted up in it. Listen to any one of his podcasts with his former co-host and current head coach JJ Redick. Whether he will break that down to a different audience during games, or on a pre- and post-game show, is completely different.
Brady caught flak during Week 1 in his broadcasting debut, but has improved each week, in my own view. There have been plenty of former players across both sports to transition into broadcasting that have done a good job, such as Redick himself. Others included Reggie Miller, Greg Olsen, Charles Davis, Richard Jefferson, Brian Scalabrine, Dell Curry, Tony Romo and Troy Aikman, among several others.
I’m not sure how James would fare in a cross-sport setting, just like I’m not sure how Brady would do analyzing an NBA game. It’s difficult to make that transition. Though I do think James would fare well in a broadcasting or analyzing setting regarding basketball because of his intellect and ability to connect with the youth.
