After 20 long years in the NBA, LeBron James has finally broached the subject of retirement. After the Los Angeles Lakers’ Game 4 loss to the Denver Nuggets, James has questioned his status in the NBA.
In his final game this season, James went out with a bang, stuffing the stat sheet with 40 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists in Game 4. But another topic outshone the Lakers’ loss, and that was James’ cryptic postgame press conference.
“I got to think about it,” James said during his press conference.
Earlier in the playoffs, the 38-year-old mentioned his future after a Game 3 win over the Golden State Warriors.
“I’ve done what I’ve had to do in this league, and my son is going to take his journey,” James said. “And whatever his journey, however his journey lays out, he’s going to do what’s best for him. And as his dad, and his mom, Savannah, and his brother and sister, we’re going to support him in whatever he decides to do. So, just because that’s my aspiration or my goal, doesn’t mean it’s his. And I’m absolutely OK with that.”
Fans of “The King” must be worrying right now because James has never mentioned retirement at one point in his career. Now, after a sweep in the conference finals and his oldest son, Bronny James, off to college, Father Time might have finally caught up.
As of right now, James has one season left on his current contract with the Los Angeles Lakers, worth around $51 million, and he has shown no movement in re-signing with his current squad.
The short answer to the big question of retirement is yes, there is a possibility, but there have been no signs of James slowing down quite yet.
