Laver Cup 2022: Big 4 to Join Forces for Team Europe
In this year’s Laver Cup tournament, the tennis courts will look oddly strange. For the first time, The Big 4 of tennis will NOT be competing on opposite sides of the court. Instead, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Andy Murray are teaming up to defend the title for Team Europe.
The event is an international men’s tournament between Team World and Team Europe. Each side puts forth 6 players who compete over a span of 3 days. This year’s tournament is set to take place in London between September 23-25.
As of now, Team World has named 3 players who will represent the team this year. 3 others will be named to join Felix Auger-Aliassime, Taylor Fritz, and Diego Schwartzman for Team World.
A pumped Novak Djokovic, who is coming off an incredible Wimbledon win, had this to say regarding the Big 4 joining forces.
“It’s the only [event] where you play in a team with guys you’re normally competing against.”
“To be joining Rafa, Roger and Andy – three of my biggest all-time rivals – it’s going to be a truly unique moment in the history of our sport.”QUOTE VIA abc.net
Bjorn Borg will captain Team Europe, who have been victorious at the past four Laver Cup tournaments. With the Big 4 on his team, he seems to be confident in Team Europe’s performance this year.
“I don’t think I could have imagined having these four icons of the sport on one team together. I know they, like I, appreciate the significance of this moment and will be truly up for it. Each year our goal is to win. With Rafa, Roger, Andy and Novak on the team, I like our chances.”QUOTE VIA ibtimes
Looking at Team Europe’s dominant lineup so far, it’ll be a tough test for Team World. Although, Team World is looking to win their first-ever title, so they might come out as fierce competitors to put on a good show against Team Europe.
