Lamar Jackson reportedly not consulted in hiring of new OC Todd Monken

The narrative that the Baltimore Ravens do not respect Lamar Jackson’s opinion or perspective is growing.

The team parted ways with offensive coordinator Greg Roman after their wild-card loss to Cincinnati in January. Roman’s replacement is former Georgia offensive coordinator Todd Monken. ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith was informed by someone in Jackson’s inner circle that the former MVP was reportedly not consulted in the hiring of Monken.

Jackson’s relationship with the Ravens is still turbulent given the fact that a contract extension has not been reached after over a year of negotiations. Jackson has not made any comments publicly about the situation yet. But more signs of disrespect from the Ravens may cause Jackson to reevaluate his future in Baltimore. Jackson does deserve at the least to be able to share his opinions.

Ravens Offensive Outlook for the Future

Monken is bringing lofty expectations to the Ravens offense. The back-to-back national champion Georgia Bulldogs’ offensive coordinator is leaving a very comfortable job in Athens. This will not be the 57-year-old’s first stint as an NFL offensive coordinator, though.

Monken was the Browns’ offensive coordinator in 2019 before accepting the position at Georgia. He was also an offensive coordinator in Tampa Bay all three seasons prior to that.

Monken’s first challenge in Baltimore will be to gain the trust of his new quarterback, mainly because Jackson did not even get consulted in the hiring of his new offensive coordinator.

The Ravens decision to fire offensive coordinator Greg Roman came as a slight surprise in the NFL world. Despite having a very mediocre offense, Baltimore was still a playoff team in 2022. Roman was the offensive coordinator when the Ravens set the record for most rushing yards as a team (3,296) in 2019 — the same year Jackson won league MVP.

The Ravens hope the hiring of Monken will reignite their offense and Jackson to the level it was in 2019. If Monken is unable to add offensive weapons or improve Baltimore’s current players, major change in Baltimore could be sooner rather than later.
