Winning games that matter with Luka Doncic is the end-all-be-all for the Dallas Mavericks. We know how this league works and if there isn’t a pathway to a championship your star is going to want out. Winning has to be the goal, even if it means Kyrie.
The bottom line is that Dallas wasn’t good enough. Especially not good enough after losing Jalen Brunson. Forget about the price tag, Brunson has been awesome with New York and his impact is felt in the standings. Dallas is a 6th seed today with a record of 28-26. Not good enough for any team that has Luka playing at this level. The Kyrie trade essentially gives Dallas a better version of what they had last year. It’s just a matter of it this was worth it.
Kyrie is playing out of his mind (insert whatever joke you would like). We can talk about how crazy he is but the dude is balling this year. Irving was named an Eastern Conference Starter in the All-Star game prior to the trade. Again, might be a crazy guy but he’s still really good at basketball. Kyrie is a genuine superstar that Luka has needed this whole time.
We don’t have to get too far down the Kyrie rabbit hole to know he’s a bit out there. He’s asked out of Cleveland, Boston, and now Brooklyn. It’s fair to wonder if the trade causes more harm than good. Was the risk worth it? Worse yet, is this the thing that pushed Luka out the door? With Kyrie, you never truly know. He did push James Harden out of Brooklyn once upon a time…
The Mavericks had to do something. Putting out a fraud team with Luka isn’t an option. Regardless, Kyrie makes them way more interesting and now you cannot count out Dallas. Are we envisioning a Mavericks team where Luka has less of a burden to carry a team? It’s popcorn time and I can’t wait to see how this turns out.
