The 2022-23 season was certainly a letdown for Dallas Mavericks fans. Just two years ago, they were in the Western Conference finals and ended up losing in five to the would-be championship Warriors. It wasn’t the ideal ending but still one that gave Dallas fans hope for the future. A trade for Kyrie Irving before the trade deadline was support to right the ship but only seemed to make things worse.
This has led to many people believing that Irving won’t re-sign with the Mavericks. I mean it surely would be on character for him to leave so soon. But while he is still a member of the Mavericks he is going to do whatever he can to try and recruit top-end talent. So why not start with former teammate and NBA legend LeBron James?
Irving has reportedly reached out in an attempt to convince James to leave Los Angeles and join him in Dallas alongside Luka Doncic, according to NBA insider Shams Charania of The Athletic.
Sources: Kyrie Irving has reached out to Lakers star LeBron James in attempts to see if James would come to Dallas. Irving is a free agent this offseason.

I can’t be the only person who thinks this is a crazy idea, right? I’d honestly be surprised if Kyrie Irving himself is a Maverick at the start of next season. We saw that it just didn’t work with him and Doncic, and that their games just aren’t compatible with each other. Doncic even expressed frustration with trying to run the offense with Kyrie Irving.
Both are players who dominate with the ball in their hands and excel at creating their own shot, thereby creating offense for others. Now imagine adding one of the most ball-dominant players of all time onto that team.
You could imagine how that could be a slight issue and hinder the scoring of all players involved. I know if I’m the Mavericks, I’m not paying Kyrie Irving all that money. Sure, he’s a talented player, but he has also been cancer everywhere he’s been and constantly creating off-the-court distractions.
If I’m being honest, this report is probably mostly B.S.; maybe it’s just a lame attempt at a smoke screen on an otherwise slow news day.
To me, it’s one of those ideas that look/sounds better on paper. The thought of these three on a team would scare most NBA fans. But realistically I don’t see that offense working as a unit and being very cohesive.
In all, I 100 percent do not see this move happening. LeBron James may not even be coming back for another season and I doubt he comes back to play for the Mavericks. Along with that, I sure as hell don’t think Irving will be back with the team either.
I know Dallas gave up a lot to acquire him, but I think it needs to take the loss on that because it would be a mistake to give Kyrie Irving the long-term extension he wants.
I don’t know what direction the Mavericks should go in, but wherever it is, it needs to start with not re-signing Kyrie Irving and using that money to improve the team in other places.
