Kylian Mbappé Asks to Leave PSG in January
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) forward Kylian Mbappé has asked to leave the French club in the January transfer window with reports from Mario Cortegana of Marca saying that the relationship between the club and player is “completely broken.”
The relationship surrounding PSG has been in a rocky place the past season and a half, with a division in the team appearing around the drama between Neymar and Mbappé.
Mbappé signed a new contract at PSG just five months ago amidst rumors that the 23-year-old star could be leaving France in favor of Real Madrid.
According to an ESPN report, Mbappé feels betrayed by sporting director Luís Campos, president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and manager Christophe Galtier as promises made to him when he signed the new deal have not been kept.
Amongst those promises was that Neymar would be sold, which never happened despite PSG looking for offers. Mbappé was also reportedly told he would play with a team built around him.
PSG has been playing a formation with Mbappé as the sole striker with Neymar and Lionel Messi sitting behind. While this may be as dangerous an attacking trio in the world, Mbappé has made it clear that he would rather play a two-striker formation similar to what he does with the French National Team alongside Olivier Giroud.
In 12 matches for PSG this season, nine in Ligue 1 and three in the UEFA Champions League, the 2018 World Cup winner has scored 11 times, tied for most on the team with Neymar.
PSG currently sit unbeaten atop the Ligue 1 table and is tied for first in their Champions League group with Portuguese side Benfica.
If Mbappé is to leave in January, the teams leading the race are Real Madrid and Liverpool. However, it would be much more likely that he remains on the team until the summer as they look to win PSG’s first-ever Champions League title.
