Scouting Kyler Murray was a tough one in college. We all thought he was just going to play baseball. I also said before Murray played a snap at Oklahoma that I thought he was better than Baker Mayfield. That proved to be true as Murray put up even better numbers than Mayfield and won his own Heisman. Still, Murray is the shortest quarterback in the NFL. Was there a threshold that was needed at the position? From watching Murray during his rookie season, it’s becoming more and more obvious that he’s going to make it. Kyler Murray is proving he is a franchise quarterback.
Murray has all the desired mobility for the position as well as an unbelievable arm. It’s one thing to be able to take off and run. It’s another to extend plays the way Murray does. According to Next Gen stats, Murray is the hardest quarterback in the NFL to sack. That’s a very valuable skillset to have. The Cardinals’ poor offensive line is well documented. Murray is playing much better than he should and making up for a bad unit in front of him. That alone speaks to how Murray is living up to potential.
Kyler Murray is one of the best high school quarterbacks ever. He never lost a start in high school. That was with having a baseball background. You can see his baseball background on the field too. His slide when he takes off and run is clean and beautiful. His footwork is on point and really sets himself up to throw. Not to mention that he’s got a rocket. Murray’s arm talent is off the charts good.
How many quarterbacks in the league make this throw? There is an eye test thing with Murray. He jumps off the screen with the throws he makes. Dart after dart. Rope after rope. Murray makes some throws that take your breath away.
From a passing standpoint, Murray is playing damn well. 65 percent with a 14-5 TD to INT ratio. You will take that every day of the week as a rookie. Murray doesn’t have a great cast of receivers either. It’s washed Larry Fitzgerald and Christian Kirk. David Johnson isn’t the same dude either. Murray is playing his ass off with very little. Murray’s playstyle is very sustainable too. He always looks to throw and he delivers straight darts.
The Cardinals have to be really encouraged with what they’re seeing out of Kyler Murray. Every time I watch the Cardinals, Murray looks like a star. He’s just scratching the surface. As Murray and Kliff Kingsbury continue to grow together, this tandem has the potential to be one of the best in the NFL. Kyler Murray is going to make it.
