Kyler Murray got paid. If there was any doubt about Murray’s status as Arizona’s franchise quarterback, think again. The former number one overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft just got the bag. The new extension will keep Murray with the Cardinals through the 2028 NFL season.
Adam Schefter of ESPN was the first to report the news of the contract. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network was the first to suggest a deal was close.
The total value of the contract is worth $230.5 million, adding that the contract carries $160 million. Murray now ranks 2nd in both AAV trailing Aaron Rodgers and 2nd in guaranteed value behind Deshaun Watson. A pretty nice pay day for the Cardinals quarterback.
There were plenty of reports of acrimony between the two sides leading up to the contract. Many people don’t believe Murray is the long term answer at the position. Murray won rookie of the year and has made back-to-back Pro Bowls. However, his late-season playoff performance against the Rams was as ugly as it gets.
The 2022-23 season is a big one for Murray and the Cardinals. DeAndre Hopkins is suspended to start the season. Arizona used their first round pick to acquire Marquise Brown and drafted tight end Trey McBride out of Colorado State. Arizona has invested a lot in weapons to help Murray thrive. Now it’s time for him to take that next step and become an elite level franchise quarterback.
