Losing Marcus Smart sucks and there is no way around it. Especially after we found out that Charmin ultra soft snake Brad Stevens lied to him on his way out the door. However, if we’re going to take an optimistic look following the trade, there is a real unforeseen positive after the deal. How the hell did the Celtics get Kristaps Porziņģis to sign that contract extension?
Porziņģis, 27, was eligible to sign a contract extension this offseason worth $77 million over two years. Boston somehow got him to take a $17 million discount on that number. We’re talking about a guy coming off a season where he averaged 23.2 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game. Porziņģis clearly wants to win because that extension is highway robbery given the new rules.
The thing that Porziņģis provides that Boston never had in the past is the ability to play that two man game. Al Horford is running on fumes and can’t do anything offensively other than jack up bad threes. Rob Williams is a nice lob threat but isn’t really a threat outside of the paint. Porziņģis is going to work wonders on this team.
There are now so many doors that become opened with this deal. The pick and pop game Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown can now play didn’t exist before. Before it was head down and try to drive to the basket. Now you have a 7-foot-3 demi god that can cause havoc and hit shots from the outside at an efficient rate. Porziņģis converted 38.5% of his attempts from beyond the arc last year. There are maybe five guys in the league like this that exist?
Again, losing Smart absolutely sucks and I hate it. If Boston fans are going to look for reasons to be optimistic, the Kristaps Porziņģis extension was a stroke of brilliance. To have him locked into that number during these core years can’t be understated.
