Don’t tell Kris Letang that he can’t look at the standings. He knows exactly where the Penguins sit in the metro every single day. Letang is a multiple time Stanley Cup winner and you bet your ass he wants to know where his team stands in December of the regular season.
“I’m watching them every day,” Letang said following Pittsburgh’s win against the New York Rangers, according to team reporter Michelle Crechiolo. “That’s how tight it is. You see how we created a gap with that losing streak, and you’re like, oh, shoot – we have to get going. You don’t want to dig yourself too deep because it’s too tough of a division and league.”
How do you not love this? Letang, 35, is coming off a stroke and he’s right back in the lineup to make sure Pittsburgh gets back in the dance. This Penguins group has nothing to prove, yet remain as hungry as ever. Pittsburgh has made the playoffs in every year since the 2006-2007 season.
It remains to be seen how many real cracks this Penguins core has left in them to go win a Cup. The Malkin, Crosby, Letang core has reached their mid 30’s. Having stud Jake Guentzel around sure helps.
Right now, Pittsburgh once again finds themselves in the mix just four points behind leading Carolina. The Devils and Rangers both have to be taken seriously as well. The Metro is so packed that Washington with record setting Ovechkin wouldn’t even sniff the postseason. Crazy to think about.
