Five-Star Edge Matayo Uiagalelei Commits to Oregon

Five-star edge Matayo Uiagalelei, the brother of former Clemson quarterback DJ Uiagalelei, has committed to Oregon. Uiagalelei is ranked number No. 31 in the 2023 football recruiting class in the 247 Sports composite rankings.

Uiagalelei played high school football at St. John Bosco in Bellflower, California. In his time in high school, he displayed an elite combination of size and athleticism. Uiagaelelei is listed as 6′ 5″ and 265 pounds. This combination of size and speed has helped him wreak havoc off the edge and he produced as a tight end in high school as well.

Uiagaelelei’s recruitment was a close race between a handful of powerhouses including Oregon, USC, and Ohio State.

This was a close race, but ultimately Oregon pulled ahead due to the relationships he built with the Oregon staff and players.

“I just had a great comfort level with Oregon,” Uiagalelei said. “I felt really comfortable with the coaches and a lot of the players on the team and loved my visits every time I was there.” Quote via 247Sports.

Oregon head coach Dan Lanning’s reputation as a great defensive coach also helped push Oregon over the top.

“Coach Lanning is real cool,” Uiagalelei said. “When he was at Georgia, he was the DC and also worked with the outside ‘backers and he has a great defensive reputation.” Quote via 247Sports.

Oregon is red-hot on the recruiting trail. Earlier today five-star safety Peyton Bowen and four-star quarterback Austin Novosad.

This work has pushed Oregon’s 2023 recruiting class to seventh in the 247 Sports team rankings. This is powered by three five-star recruits and 15 four-stars. Oregon currently has 27 recruits so they still have room to squeeze in a few more impact players.
