Over one month after firing head coach Tom Thibodeau, the New York Knicks have hired Mike Brown as the team’s next head man, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania first reported Wednesday.
Brown ultimately won the job over former Memphis Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins, Minnesota Timberwolves assistant Micah Nori and South Carolina women’s basketball head coach Dawn Staley, among others.
The two-time Coach of the Year was fired by the Kings last December, which drew heavy criticism across the NBA. Let’s not forget that he completely flipped their culture–similar to Thibodeau with the Knicks–engineering the league’s best offense and helping the Sacramento Kings snap a 17-year playoff drought.
Brown, 55, has been a head coach at two other stops prior to his three-year stint with the Kings; he coached twice with the Cleveland Cavaliers and once with the Los Angeles Lakers. He is 454-304 (.599) in his coaching career, has been to an NBA Finals, knows how to hold players accountable and knows how to establish a culture.
It took a while for the Knicks to find coaches who were able to interview for the position, but there weren’t many better than Brown available–unless they were willing to dip their toes into a first-year head coach. Brown was successful with Sacramento. Will he be able to lead Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns and the Knicks back to the promise land?!
