Kliff Kingsbury expected to join USC’s Staff

After a brief time away from football, former Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury is expected to join USC’s staff. Kingsbury will go from one former No. 1 pick Kyler Murray to potential No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams, according to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero.

The 43-year-old is set to be alongside head coach Lincoln Riley at the University of Southern California. Kingsbury will have the best quarterback in college football in the palm of his hands in Caleb Williams. Williams earned the most prestigious award in college football last season, the Heisman Trophy.

Kingsbury’s College Coaching History:

Kingsbury spent six seasons with the Texas Tech Red Raiders from 2013 to 2018. The Texas native led the Red Raiders to three bowl games, including a win over Arizona State in the Holiday Bowl in 2013. Kingsbury would go on to lose his next two bowl game appearances in 2015 and 2017. He would eventually achieve a 35-40 record with the Red Raiders before leaving for USC for a brief time.

Kingsbury’s time with the Arizona Cardinals:

In December 2018, USC hired Kingsbury as their offensive coordinator. He would spend one month with the team before being interviewed by the New York Giants and Arizona Cardinals in January 2019, ultimately signing a deal to be the Cardinals’ next head man.

Kingsbury’s time in Arizona only lasted four horrible years. The Cardinals’ best season in Kingsbury’s tenure was 11-6 in 2021. In 2021, the Cardinals started off hot with a 10-2 record to become the leaders in the NFC West, but thanks to a mid-season collapse, they would lose four out of their last five games and finish second in their division. Arizona eventually lost in Kingsbury’s playoff debut to the Los Angeles Rams 34-11 in the first round of the playoffs.
