Ah, yes, the end of an era! After 13 years with the Golden State Warriors, Klay Thompson is heading to Dallas! According to ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, Thompson is signing a three-year, $50 million with the reigning West champion Mavericks in a sign-and-trade.
According to Woj, to help facilitate the sign-and-trade, the Mavericks will be sending the Charlotte Hornets wing Josh Green and two second-round picks.
This comes roughly 48 hours after it was reported from Tim Kawakami of The Athletic that Thompson and the Warriors have had “close to no communication” since the negotiating period opened two weeks ago. Thus, it was pretty set in stone that Thompson would not be returning, whether it be via sign-and-trade or not.
Since the Warriors haven’t reportedly taken any players back in the trade, they are able to generate a $15.9 million trade exception while freeing up their $12.8 million mid-level exception. According to Spotrac, they are $24.6 million below the luxury tax and $31.9 million below the $178.132 million first apron–should they want to use their MLE.
The Mavericks added forward Naji Marshall Sunday evening and now add Thompson, who averaged 17.9 points on 38.7 percent shooting from 3-point range last year. He’s not as good of a defender, but there are nights where he can still be one of the best shooters on the face of this earth.
Though if he’s not knocking down shots, he doesn’t add much else. Dallas much two of their best defenders in Jones and Green, and while they add a good one in Marshall, it still may not be enough if Klay looks like a shell of himself.
It’s a big bet to make for the Mavericks, but it also may be a worthwhile one. What do you think about the move? Let us know in the comments!
