Kings’ Todd McLellan Accurately Blasts Pierre-Luc Dubois

Is the Pierre-Luc Dubois trade coming back to haunt the Kings? If you read the site when the trade went down, you shouldn’t be surprised that the deal isn’t going LA’s way. Kings head coach Todd McLellan blasted Dubois and wants more out of the new offseason acquisition.

“At the end of the day, whether PL gets four minutes or gets 24 minutes, he has to be a difference-maker,” he explained following a 4-3 shootout loss to the San Jose Sharks on Monday, per Hockey Royalty’s Russell Morgan. “And with or without the puck, we’ve gone through this long enough. It’s time.”

Dubois, 25, has been a total disaster with the Kings. In 45 games with the Kings, Dubois has recorded 10 goals and 10 assists. The former Blue Jackets and Jets center is in line for a career-worst season. He’s also a -14 Kings team that’s otherwise really good.

I get what Rob Blake was trying to do here but this was always a risky call. We’re talking about a guy who requested a trade twice in a league full of guys who may as well be Spartans and die on their shields. Dubois is talented but he has no rat in him. When I say rat I mean the stuff Brad Marchand has in him.

Gabriel Vilardi and Alex Iafallo were shipped to Winnipeg in the deal and both have been positive influences. So much so that Winnipeg is currently leading the Central Division. It’s essentially the same Jets team that was an 8th seed a season ago with Dubois.
