Should the NBA expand? There have been plenty of rumors in the past of Seattle and Las Vegas getting a team in the near future. If you ask Kevin Durant, he thinks the NBA could support at least four or five more teams.
Durant had this to say while speaking at CNBC and Boardroom’s Game Plan Summit:
“The NBA is so huge, but I don’t know if the other owners would want to split that up amongst new teams, things are going so well. But yeah, I feel like there could be four or five new teams,” Durant said. “Everybody loves basketball.”
He added, “I was a part of an expansion-like franchise in OKC, and to see where that city was in 2008, 2009 and to see where it is now – there’s like four or five skyscraper buildings that I would’ve never thought would be there. Resort-like hotels, trolleys through the city. … A lot of that is because of the injection of a sports franchise into that city. So I feel like a lot of cities around the United States probably are calling Adam Silver to bring a team to their city.”
Adam Silver clearly hasn’t been shy to talk about expansion. The league is oozing with talent and it probably wouldn’t be hard to find takers for franchises. Hell, even a city like Pittsburgh could easily host a team and play in the same arena as the Penguins. Pittsburgh probably isn’t anywhere on the radar but that’s the point. You could definitely squeeze four more teams in the NBA. It’s a matter of if there is enough talent to support those teams to where they can actually compete within a reasonable amount of time.
