I dated a girl in college with the last name Coleman. Don’t worry, you won’t be able to find her so just hang tight for storytime. I never saw her as my future wife but sometimes I think about her when times get tough. I imagine that’s exactly how Michigan State football fans will view Keon Coleman.
It won’t define Michigan State football but they will miss him. If the Spartans don’t right the ship, this will be a turning point in the program that we end up remembering. In case you missed it, former four star wide receiver will be leaving Michigan State and taking his talents to Florida State. It’s still unconfirmed whether Coleman will be majoring in basket weaving or not.
FSU lands another tall drink of water at the wide receiver position with this acquisition. The wide receiver room in Tallahassee is littered with tall MFers.
Johnny Wilson is 6-foot-7
Keon Coleman is 6-foot-4
Deuce Spann is 6-foot-4
Darion Williamson is 6-foot-3
That’s not even including tight end Jaheim Bell who will be one of the first off the board in the TE class for 2024.
Florida State is a legitimate contender for the ACC and college football playoff this year. That, however, is a topic for another day. Today we’re still thinking about Coleman and will try to gauge whether or not this move was the best thing for his NFL Draft stock. The short answer should be a resounding yes.
It’s hard to get a gauge on NFL Draft stock when general managers running teams are brain dead. I just watched five star cornerback Kelee Ringo go in the fourth round after being part of back-to-back national title teams. The first team in which Ringo delivered the game winning interception over Alabama in the title game. It doesn’t make sense but the draft politics are always unpredictable.
I say that to say this; being part of a winning team should help your draft stock. Especially when you are a big reason why the team is winning. Moving away from Michigan State probably was the smart decision. The Spartans were a five win team last year and Jayden Reed just left for the draft. Payton Thorne also dipped for Auburn. It was also a Sparty team that couldn’t run the football at all last year and there is no guarantee that would have changed in 2023. Based on the direction of the program, I’d probably want out of there too.
I don’t care what anybody says, Keon Coleman is really good and far better than Reed who just went in the second round. Coleman is a former four star guy that just posted 58 receptions for 798 yards and seven touchdowns as a sophomore in a really bad offense. Coleman is uber athletic and got real minutes on the Michigan State basketball team.
There are a lot of things to like with Coleman. You can see the basketball background in his game. Really good leaper and more slippery route runner than he gets credit for. I have Coleman inside the top 15 for wide receivers next year but I could very easily be too low right now. If Coleman takes another step forward, he could easily go higher than his former teammate Reed did this past year.
For Keon Coleman, the move to Florida State was probably smart. It’s a much better team and there won’t be a question mark at quarterback. Jordan Travis is a savvy collegiate vet at this point. Stylistically, the two should fit in just fine together.
