Brian Kelly landed one of the best wide receivers in the transfer portal, as On3.com reports that former Kentucky receiver Barion Brown has transferred to LSU. Brown announced he would be entering the transfer portal back on December 6th, and quickly found a new home in Baton Rogue. The news Brown would transfer versus declare for the draft was surprising, as his blazing speed would certainly intrigue NFL teams, but after a lackluster 2024, he will look to improve his stock with the Tigers.
The real winner out of all this is Garrett Nussmeier. Nussmeier is staying for the 2025 season, and this offense could use an influx of speed. Enter Barion Brown. With CJ Daniels hitting the portal and Kyren Lacy gone to the NFL, Brown will slide into a primary target role for this LSU squad. Now, the question is will Kelly use Brown in the optimal way to capitalize on his speed? To be determined. But on paper, this is a home run for LSU.
Barion Brown totaled 122 receptions for 1,528 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns in 37 games played for the Wildcats. His running mate Dane Key has also hit the portal, leaving two massive holes for that Kentucky offense. Brown, a 2024 Preseason First-Team Freshman All-American, struggled mightily this season, bringing in just 29 receptions for 361 yards and three touchdowns. Not only will he look to vastly improve those totals at LSU, but will also bring his return skills to their program as well. Utilizing speed guys like Brown can be troublesome for some coaches, but I am hoping Brown can turn his production around in 2025.
