The MVP race is well underway as the NBA season is past All-Star Weekend. There are a couple of players that have separated themselves from the pack but it is a bit tricky this year due to a required minimum of games played. The front runners for the MVP award consist of Nikola Jokic, Joel Embiid, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Luka Doncic. However, analyst Kendrick Perkins thinks there is a case to be made for another NBA Star. Perkins believes Kings’ center Domantas Sabonis should be talked about more in the MVP conversation.
This proposition by Perkins appeared to make his other co-hosts laugh in the small clip above. However, this is not a shocker as Sabonis is one of the most underrated players in the NBA. He is terrific just about every night he is on the floor consistently putting up great stat lines. Unfortunately, this has not led to Sabonis receiving much love from the NBA community as he was not even an All-Star this year.
Domantas Sabonis was not an All-Star selection this year despite his incredible statistics and the Kings being the fifth seed in the West at that time. Interestingly enough, Sabonis has been on the Kia MVP Ladder for multiple weeks this season. Furthermore, he was tied for sixth with Kawhi Leonard right before the All-Star Break.
It seems like Sabonis does not have a clear position or rank among the stars of the NBA but if anything he does have some support from analyst Kendrick Perkins.
The Kings are currently the eighth seed in the West which is a huge issue for a player on the team trying to win MVP. This is a major hurdle holding Sabonis back but his numbers this year are not talked about enough in the media. Sabonis leads the league in rebounds at 13.2 per game, triple-doubles with 21, and double-doubles with 54.
In the past, Triple doubles were a huge argument point for the MVP award whether it was Russell Westbrook or Nikola Jokic. Now, it seems like Sabonis’ feats are getting overlooked. Also, he is averaging 19.9 points and 8.4 assists while shooting 61 percent from the field and 42 percent from the three-point line. These types of stats are why some people including Kendrick Perkins think Sabonis has a case for the NBA MVP.
