The Detroit Lions and Dan Campbell are fresh off a trip to the NFC championship where they lost to the San Francisco 49ers. A big reason for their success was their high-powered offense led by quarterback Jared Goff. The Lions have a great running back duo and a star wide receiver in Amon Ra St. Brown. Now, head coach Dan Campbell is already looking toward next season and rounding out the starting wide receiver core. However, it appears all the jobs are up for grabs as he said younger wide receiver Jameson Williams will have to fight to earn a starting role.
Dan Campbell shares his thoughts on Williams when speaking to media at the NFL Scouting Combine.
”And you can see, by the end of the year, we really felt like he started to come into his own. He is gonna push to be a full-time starter now. And that’s what we’re looking for.”
(-Dan Campbell)
The Lions have a lot of offensive weapons and a solid offensive line heading into next year. They struck gold last year with phenomenal play from rookie running back Jahmyr Gibbs and tight end Sam Laporta. Now, they will need to make a free agency move or hope their younger wide receivers can step up and produce behind St. Brown. All eyes will be on third-year wide receiver Jameson Williams to take the leap next year and prove he is an NFL starter.
Dan Campbell acknowledged that Williams’ path has been unorthodox due to injuries and suspensions. However, next year will be the perfect opportunity for the former Alabama product to break out. Also, he was a former first-round pick so there are some heavy expectations on him to showcase he deserved to be a first-round selection.
Campbell has shown his support for Williams so it will be interesting to see if the young wide receiver can develop into a great wide receiver for the Detroit Lions.
Jameson Williams had a fantastic 2021 season at Alabama as he was named a first-team All-American. Unfortunately, Williams tore his ACL in the 2022 National Championship game. Nevertheless, he was selected 12th overall in the 2022 NFL Draft. The Lions passed up on wide receivers such as George Pickens, Jahan Dotson, and Treylon Burks to take the injured Williams. His injuries led to him only playing in six games as a rookie.
Williams’ second season did not get off to a better start as he was suspended for the first four games of the season due to sports betting. Once again he was unable to fully get acclimated to the system and was facing another uphill battle. However, he overcame these obstacles and started 10 games for Detroit last season. Also, he became a reliable option for the Lions during their post-season run. Now, it is time for Williams to become the star he was drafted to be as he will have the whole offseason and training camp to carve out a bigger role. He has the talent to be a solid number two option but Dan Campbell will make Jameson Williams earn his starting role next season.
