With Brian Daboll gone to the Giants, Ken Dorsey has some big shoes to fill for the Bills. Can he be as good as Daboll? It’s a big unknown.
Ken Dorsey has never been a coordinator at any level before. He played college football at Miami and had a very decorated career which included being named a first-team All-American, two-time Archie Griffin award winner, two-time NCAA Quarterback of the year, two-time Chic Harley award winner, a Maxwell award winner, and a BCS National Champion. He was drafted in the seventh round of the 2003 NFL draft to the San Francisco 49ers where he played from 2003 to 2005. He also played for the Cleveland Browns from 2006 to 2008. Dorsey threw for just over 2,000 yards, eight touchdowns, and 18 interceptions before joining the Toronto Argonauts for a single season. In 2011, Dorsey served as a pro scout for the Carolina Panthers for two years before becoming the team’s quarterback coach from 2013 to 2017.
In 2018 he had quite the career switch and become an assistant athletic director at Florida International University. Just a year later he became the quarterbacks coach for the Buffalo Bills and remained in that position through the 2020 season. In 2021 he gained the additional title of passing game coordinator, and in 2022 he will serve as the offensive coordinator.
It’s fair the be concerned about Dorsey’s ability to be as good as Brain Daboll due to a clear lack of coordinator experience. Before coming to Buffalo, Daboll has five years of experience as a coordinator which included stints with the Cleveland Browns, Miami Dolphins, Kansas City Chiefs, and the Alabama Crimson Tide, highlighted by a National Championship victory. Dorsey lacks that experience, which is why it’s fair to be concerned about him replacing Daboll in Buffalo, and why I feel the Bills will take a step back offensively.
Having great players on the offense will definitely help Dorsey, but don’t be surprised if the Bills take a step back as an offense in 2022.
