Kemba Walker is on the move this morning, being traded from the Boston Celtics to the Oklahoma City Thunder, per Adrian Wojnarowski.
Brad Stevens wasted little time in his new role as General Manager of the Celtics, trading Walker and the No. 16 overall pick this year and a 2025 second-round pick to the Thunder for Al Horford, Moses Brown, and a 2023 second-round pick. This trade only further bolsters Sam Presti’s repertoire of first-round picks in future NBA drafts This trade does two major things for these franchises, it lets go of Kemba Walker, which is something former Head Coach Brad Stevens was keen on and reunites Al Horford with Boston.
Another major thing to consider here is the massive salary relief this now provides the Boston Celtics. By moving Kemba Walker, the Celtics are getting out from under $73M in future cap space, which will prove to be vital in the years to come as they look to extend both Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum in future off-seasons. While the move has been viewed so far on social media as questionable, clearly Brad Stevens has a clear idea of what he wants his new franchise to look like and is taking them in a new direction.
This Boston Celtics team is in flux right now, after making the Conference Finals two seasons ago in the bubble, to a first-round exit from the 2021 NBA Playoffs and now all the off-season personnel moves this team is making. It is clear that they needed fresh starts from top to bottom, but the off-season for the Celtics and their fans is off to a unique start, to say the least.
