Kayvon Thibodeaux: Saquon Barkley Should Have Been Paid First Over Daniel Jones

New York Giants’ Kayvon Thibodeaux thinks that Saquon Barkley deserved a payday before anyone–including signal caller Daniel Jones–in the 2023 offseason.

If you look at the game, the tape, Saquon was responsible for at least 30% of our explosive plays, talking about the year we won the playoff game,” Thibodeaux said on the “7PM in Brooklyn” podcast earlier this week. “I feel like Saquon should have got paid first. That’s what I feel.”

The last time the Giants were in the playoffs was in the 2022 season when they defeated the Minnesota Vikings, 31-24 — Thibodeaux’s rookie season. Barkley had 1312 rushing yards with 10 rushing touchdowns and entered free agency that offseason before getting placed on the franchise tag placed on him. Thus, his contract extended for another year in a deal worth $10.1 million, according to Spotrac.

The Giants also had Daniel Jones heading into the free agency before the Giants agreed to a four-year deal worth $160 million. He threw for 3205 yards and 15 touchdowns while running for 708 yards and seven additional touchdowns on the ground in the same season Saquon ran for over 1000 yards, proving that Thibodeaux’s “30% explosive plays” comment is nearly correct.

The 2023 offseason saw the Giants pay Jones ahead Saquon Barkley–who will be entering free agency once again this offseason. The running back was preparing to sit out the start of the 2023 season, despite not doing so, while Jones saw his contract extension mere months after the 2022 season.

Despite the comments about who should have gotten paid first, Thibodeaux’s comment wasn’t in a negative light, and still believes in Daniel Jones, who unfortunately suffered an ACL tear this past November and saw Tommy Devito replace him before veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor ended the season behind center.

Jones will be locked up for the next three seasons while Barkley enters free agency once again. Will the Giants pay him or will someone else? Let us know in the comments!
