Justin Herbert is a very different player than his Oregon days

The name Justin Herbert is probably not a name you’re familiar with unless you voluntarily watch the Los Angeles Chargers, and I don’t know why you would. As an occasional Denver Broncos fan, I’m forced to watch the Broncos take on the Chargers twice a year, but this year’s matchup will be a little different. LA has a new chief in town, and he goes by the name of Justin Herbert.  The Los Angeles Chargers advanced to a whopping 2-4 record after beating the Jaguars. Now, that is not particularly exciting…unless you previously have a 1-4 record.

LA advanced to 2-4 following a victory over the Jaguars on Sunday. That’s not particularly exciting…unless you previously have a 1-4 record. Herbert completed 27 of 43 passes for 347 yards and three touchdowns. All of his touchdowns were deep passes with over 20 air yards. He’s the only quarterback this season with 3+ touchdown passes in one game.

Herbert’s 6’6, 236-pound frame is backed with a strong arm and impeccable running skills, he had 66 rushing yards, including a 31 yard touchdown run.

This is Herbert’s first season in the league after a successful collegiate career at the University of Oregon. He earned the Rose Bowl MVP just last season. He also made the Academic All-American team with his immaculate 4.2 GPA in his field of study, biology.

Herbert is already impressing in his first NFL season, he did the same in his first season as Oregon Duck. He was Oregon’s first true freshman since 1983, to start at quarterback. He showcased his throwing and running skills time and time again in his four seasons with his hometown Ducks.

Sunday’s victory was Herbert’s first win as a starter but through no fault of his own. The Chargers lost in overtime to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs earlier in the season, lost by one to Tom Brady and the Buccaneers, and had four touchdowns and zero interceptions against Drew Brees and the Saints.

LA may not be looking at playoffs this season, but with Justin’s newfound consistency and confidence in the pocket, Chargers fans may have found their long term, golden quarterback.
