Mike Williams got a lot of money this offseason. Maybe too much money. Justin Herbert doesn’t care because if it were up to him, Mike Williams would have gotten more money. The former Oregon quarterback is pumped the Chargers kept Williams and made his thoughts well known.
“Mike Williams has been huge,” Herbert said, via Jeff Kerr of CBSSports.com. “He’s one of those guys that if you need a conversion on third down — he’s going to be open. As special and as talented as he is as an athlete, he’s an even better teammate. For us to keep him around, I thought that was big for this franchise because he’s such a big part of our offense. Without him, we’re not the same team. It was really good to keep him.”
Williams, 27, got $60 million over the next three years. Personally, there is not a shot I’m giving him that contract. I don’t know if the former Clemson receiver had any other bidders but I have a hard time believing he deserves a $20 million AAV. 2021-22 was by far his best season (1,146 yards, 77 receptions, 9 touchdowns) but the total body of work is far from elite and as a big body guy who lacks separation he probably won’t age well. We’re talking bout Mike Williams, right?
Obviously having Justin Herbert helps. I guess we’ll never know if Herbert had any say in the decision. Given his demeanor, I’m sure that likely wasn’t the case. The Chargers are another one of those AFC West teams chomping at the bit. If LA emerges, Williams will need to stay healthy and continue to be productive.
At the moment, Williams has an ADP of 55 in fantasy. Seems a little rich for my blood. Especially when I think we can all agree that Keenan Allen is the way more talented player. We’re going to see what Williams is really made of heading into the 2022 season because now the pressure is on. $40 million is guaranteed. It’s time to show up.
