Justin Gaethje has ‘dreamt of ending Conor McGregor’s career’

Justin Gaethje and Conor McGregor have been some of the most popular lightweights in the UFC for many years, but the pair have never crossed paths. After UFC 291, McGregor called out Gaethje and the bout gained some traction. In a recent interview, Gaethje revealed his intentions if he ever locked in an octagon with McGregor.

In a 30th Anniversary Q&A during UFC 293 fight week, Gaethje spoke about a potential bout with McGregor.

“I’d be lying if didn’t say I’ve dreamt of ending (Conor McGregor’s) career and making sure he was never able to step back in there,” Gaethje said. “Chandler will now be the second guy that I’ve beat that he has chose to fight. I think that speaks for itself. He won’t fight me, plain and simple.”

Gaethje has never minced words about fighting McGregor. This answer falls directly in line with previous statements. ‘The Highlight’ has a violent promise for McGregor.

The best part of this statement is that Gaethje actually has the potential to end McGregor’s career. Gaethje is a violent fighter that is capable of dealing serious damage. It does not matter if it is a flash knockout or an accumulation of shots. Either way, a loss to Gaethje can be career-altering–Tony Ferguson and James Vick are prime examples.

Outside of actual health concerns, Gaethje could ruin McGregor’s star power. Yes, Mcgregor will always be a star, but at some point, he has to win fights. A beatdown from Gaethje could sway public opinion against McGregor.

The only real question is if this fight will actually happen. According to Gaethje, McGregor is scared. Although, there is a reasonable path for the two to meet. Gaethje is currently staring down a title shot, but if he loses that bout, he will be searching for an opponent. Meanwhile, McGregor is expected to fight Michael Chandler. A win over Chandler would throw McGregor right back into the top of the lightweight top-five.
