The rumor mill is running wild and it sure feels like a real possibility that Bill Belichick could become the next head coach at the University of North Carolina after the program fired Mack Brown. However, some alumni are not rooting for that outcome. NFL Hall of Famer and former UNC great Julius Peppers is publically campaigning for Steve Wilks to get the job.
“I’m getting a few requests about my thoughts on UNC Football,” Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive end Julius Peppers said Monday on Twitter. “So I’ll just say it like this — ALL of the decision makers know who we want as our next leader. I think that’s all that matters. If we get him — great, if we don’t get him — that’s cool too. I’ve said my piece.”
Wilks, 55, is a Charlotte native and has previously coached the Panthers in the past. Peppers obviously has a connection to the Panthers as well considering the team drafted him second overall in 2002. The two likely crossed paths multiple times in the past, which is why Peppers is probably clamoring for him to get the job.
This is now the second high profile person that has essentially spoken out against Belichick. Urban Meyer also did the exact same thing in regard to the Jacksonville Jaguars job. It’s wild how many people actively don’t want Belichick to coach their team considering that he’s won six Super Bowls but I guess that’s somehow the world that we live in.
