JuJu Smith-Schuster planning to re-sign with Chiefs in offseason

JuJu Smith-Schuster, the Steelers’ second round pick in the 2017 Draft, is enjoying his new team in Kansas City. The former USC wideout did not have the best stats of his career in 2022, but Smith-Schuster can now add a Lombardi Trophy to his resume following the Chiefs’ victory in Super Bowl LVII.

After never making it past the divisional round in Pittsburgh, Smith-Schuster seems to be feeling good about his decision to sign with Kansas City. Ahead of kickoff, Smith-Schuster indicated he is planning to re-sign with the Chiefs in the offseason.

Smith-Schuster made the move to Kansas City in the offseason on a one-year deal. With Smith-Schuster hitting free agency again after the Super Bowl, his market value will likely be higher than last year. When asked about the subject, he said (via NFL.com’s Mike Giardi, on Twitter), “Yeah, I want to come back. Of course, man. Look where I’m at? I want to come back to this.”

Smith-Schuster could easily pursue more money on another team this offseason, and still could do so. Having the best quarterback in the league and winning your first Super Bowl could make that less significant, though. Still, it’s too soon to tell whether it’ll become a reality, but Smith-Schuster seemingly plans to resign with the Chiefs in the offseason.

How did Super Bowl performance affect Smith-Schuster’s plans?

The biggest question the Chiefs faced going into the season was how they would deal with the loss of Tyreek Hill. Smith-Schuster was the most notable name the Chiefs added to their wide receiver core in free agency.

Although All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce remained his usual dominant self, the Chiefs leaned on more players compared to the past to carry them to this Super Bowl berth. In the game, Smith-Schuster led the Chiefs in receptions (7) and finished second in receiving yards (53), which will likely influence the offseason decision-making.

If Smith-Schuster wants to return to his 2018 form, in which he recorded 1,426 receiving yards, having Mahomes as your quarterback is the best way to do so. His Super Bowl performance will influence some decisions, but JuJu Smith-Schuster will likely still plan on re-signing with the Chiefs in the offseason.
