In case you missed it, the Las Vegas Raiders signed veteran cornerback Marcus Peters to a one-year contract earlier this week prior to the start of training camp.
After joining the fourth team of his NFL career, Peters received high praise from new head coach Josh McDaniels. Immediately claiming the signing of Peters was an “exciting opportunity.”
McDaniels would also go on to really express his respect and admiration for Peters.
“He’s just a very intelligent football player,” McDaniels said in his Tuesday press conference. “We had multiple opportunities to sit down and talk with him. Very bright, understands the game, really a mature, intelligent guy in terms of defensive structure, coverages, reading route patterns, etc. Very impressed with that, and he wants to be a Raider.
“So it was exciting for us to be able to make that happen, and I’m excited to put him in with our group. And I know he’s eager to get to work.”
As an offensive-minded coach, McDaniels also shared personal experiences of coaching against Marcus Peters in the past.
“Marcus has been a very decorated player for the entirety of his career for the teams that he’s played for,” he said. “He’s always been a guy that — I’ve coached against him a number of times, and when you’re playing against him, you always know where he’s at, because there’s a chance you might not want to throw at him. And again, players earn that opportunity and earn [those] status, not coaches or anybody else.”
While the Raiders have one of the NFL’s best defensive lines, their secondary leaves a lot to be desired. Their signing of Marcus Peters is a great step in improving that heading into training camp and this season.
Peters will help a struggling Raiders defense is simple. He has made a positive impact on all three defenses and teams he has played for in his NFL career.
Peters first made a name for himself with 19 interceptions in his first three seasons in Kansas City, eight of which came in his rookie season. Marcus Peters then spent a year-and-a-half on the Rams where he helped them reach a Super Bowl berth in 2018. He has most recently spent the last three and a half seasons in Baltimore. Despite missing the entire 2021 season with a torn ACL, Peters still accumulated eight more interceptions as a Raven.
Despite entering his ninth NFL season, Marcus Peters is astonishingly only 30-years-old. The two-time All-Pro ballhawk cornerback will occasionally give up a big play, trying to make one of his own, but it is the price you have to pay for the player with the second-most career pick-sixes among active NFL players.
Peters still has a lot of good football left in him and is a very solid signing by the Raiders.
