Josh Allen Working on Limiting Turnovers in 2022

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen is looking to make improvements before the 2022 NFL season. 2021 was a successful season for Allen, but it was a slight reduction from his Pro Bowl season in 2020. The fifth-year quarterback has found a couple of areas that he can improve in 2022, including limiting turnovers and creating yards-after-catch opportunities.

“Main thing is still limiting turnovers, limiting bad decisions, and then ball placement on some of the underneath routes, allowing the guys to get more YAC,” Allen said, via the Bills’ website. “Last year, I don’t think we were very good in that department. So, it’s kind of on me to put the ball where it needs to be and allow our guys to utilize their legs and run after catch. I think those are the two most important things, and still just trying to develop that relationship with [new Bills offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey] and understand why he’s calling certain things in certain situations, and that comes with live reps.”

Allen threw a career-high 15 interceptions last season, per Pro Football Reference. His previous high of 12 was recorded during his rookie season in 2018. At the same time, his receivers averaged 4.3 yards after the catch — also the worst of his career.

The Bills’ wide receiver room includes Stefon Diggs, Gabriel Davis, and Jamison Crowder. Tight ends Dawson Knox and O.J. Howard will help round out the passing game. If Allen can get this group more opportunities off the catch, they will see massive production in 2022.

The increase in turnovers and decrease in yards after the catch may lead you to believe that Allen had a bad year in 2021 but that is not true. He still threw for 4,407 yards and 36 touchdowns.

Allen led the Bills to an 11-6 regular season record and first place in the AFC East. In the playoffs, they beat the New England Patriots in the Wild Card Game before losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime in the Divisional Round.

Allen has established himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL and has been rewarded for that. Prior to last season, Allen signed a six-year extension with the Bills worth $258 million. If Allen can reduce his turnovers and create more yard-after-catch opportunities for receivers he will help the Bills find more playoff success as he proves he is worth every penny of the massive contract extension.
