The last offensive play of the Buffalo Bills’ season was a very costly one.
The Bills were driving with less than a minute left and had a 4th & 5 near midfield. Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, with their season on the line, sent an unblocked corner blitz that forced quarterback Josh Allen out of the pocket right away.
As the 6-foot-4 was backpedaling, he desperately heaved a 35-yard pass to Dalton Kincaid under duress, which ultimately bounced off the 25-year-old tight end’s arms for a turnover on downs.
Despite yet another unfortunate result at the expense of Allen’s very good performance, he took all accountability when speaking to the media less than 24 hours after the team’s loss.
“I got to be better for him,” Allen said Monday, according to Pro Football Talk’s Josh Alper. “I didn’t feel like I put him in enough good situations this year, ball-placement-wise. Even the one last night over the middle — I left it behind him, allowed 32 to make a play on it. He can sit there and think about that play over and over, but I got to be better for him. That’s what it comes down to, and get him more involved. I know he’s been battling throughout the entire year, bumps and bruises and probably games that he shouldn’t have played he was in, but he’s a tough sucker, and I got nothing but love for him, how he’s approached this year. He’s going to be so much better next year. Let his body heal up, and I’m going to be better, better for him, and I can promise you that.”
Allen is one of the best playoff performers of this generation, having thrown for 25 touchdowns to just four interceptions while completing 65.7 percent of his passes for 3,359 yards in 13 games. Yet, his teams are just 7-6 in those games, including 0-4 against the Chiefs. In those games against Kansas City, he’s recorded 11 total touchdowns to just one turnover with 1,306 yards from scrimmage.
Whether it was 13 seconds, the Diggs drop or this, Allen’s been at the wrong end of several critical postseason performances … and he can’t be the blame for any of them. But he’s still going to take the blame and hold himself to the highest standard instead of throwing his teammates under the bus. Kudos, Josh.
At some point, Josh Allen going to find destiny. It’s not this year, but he will eventually.
