Arizona Diamondbacks starter Jordan Montgomery will undergo Tommy John surgery to repair his left elbow next week, he told reporters Tuesday, according to Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic.
It was previously reported by Sports Illustrated’s Jack Sommers that Montgomery was “getting hugs” in the dugout. As a result, some fans speculated whether or not a trade happened based on those rumors circulating all winter.
Well, much worse–and unsuspected–news reached their desk.
Montgomery, 32, is coming off his worst season as a pro after not having a spring training because he signed so late. He never found a rhythm, sporting a 6.23 ERA–albeit to a 4.48 FIP–in 25 appearances (21 starts).
The southpaw is in the final year of his current contract. He originally signed a one-year, $25 million deal with a vesting option for the 2025 season; since he made at least 18 starts, he is on the hook for $22.5 million this year with no financial relief.
There currently isn’t a clear timetable for his return, but one could assume he won’t be back until the middle of the 2026 season. We know the Diamondbacks likely won’t want to do business with him in the future, but I’m curious to see which of the 29 other teams take a flyer on him as he recovers from surgery. One team will bite–as long as they have starting pitching depth to withstand the injury.
