Joonas Korpisalo signs five-year, $20 million deal with Ottawa Senators
NHL free agency is starting, and that comes with big paydays, including the Ottawa Senators’ most recent addition. The team has signed Joonas Korpisalo to a five-year deal worth $20 million, according to Pro Hockey Rumors.
Korpisalo is coming off a fresh start with the Los Angeles Kings. Now, he has made his money with the Senators. This will be his third team in just over one season, as the Columbus Blue Jackets traded him to the Kings in a blockbuster deal in March.
Last season, Korpisalo made himself into a name. Korpisalo is coming off his best season of his career with the Blue Jackets and Los Angeles Kings. He achieved a combined record of 18-14-4.
In being traded to the Kings, Korpisalo drastically improved. Going from a record of 11-11-3 to 7-3-1. On top of that, his record wasn’t the only thing that improved. He saw an improvement in both GAA and save percentage, going from .913 to .921 and 3.17 to 2.13.
The eight-year veteran will earn $4 million in his first season on his new contract. It will then follow as is: $5 million in 2024-25, $4.5 million in 2026-27, and $3 million in 2027-28.
Korpisalo will immediately be promoted to the starting goaltender of the Senators, as Cam Talbot left for the Kings in free agency.
Signing a goaltender in free agency has been a top priority for the Ottawa Senators this free agency. Along with goaltending needs, Alex DeBrincat is a priority for the Senators. DeBrincat is a restricted free agent this offseason and has been rumored to be on the move out of Ottawa.
