Jonnu Smith has signed with the New England Patriots. The deal goes for 4 years and $50 million. $31.25 million of that is fully guaranteed. This was first reported by Adam Schefter via Twitter.
Jonnu Smith had about the same year in 2019 as he did in 2020. He had 41 receptions for 448 yards. While he did have small increases in his targets, receptions, and yards, none were as big as the increase for TDs. In 2019, he had only 2 TDs. In 2020, he had 8 TDs. He now heads to a new team with the New England Patriots. As of right now, he is the clear #1 receiving option in New England. While in Tennessee, he was behind AJ Brown and maybe even Corey Davis.
The Patriots desperately needed a TE. The ones they drafted in the 3rd round did not pan out. With the receiving game already struggling as it is for WRs, their picks did not help. The Patriots are trying to rectify that with Jonnu. He could be in for a big year to go along with his big contract as the #1 receiving option for them. It seemingly looks like Cam Newton will be the starter again for the Patriots in 2021, but that remains to be seen.
At least Cam Newton will have a shiny new weapon in his arsenal with Jonnu Smith who helped out Ryan Tannehill. We will see how much Jonnu’s contract will impact the rest of the Patriots’ free agency moves in the 2021 offseason.
