Jonathan Papelbon calls Alex Verdugo ‘a b*tch’
Every Red Sox fan’s favorite madman Jonathan Papelbon ripped into now-former Red Sox outfielder Alex Verdugo for his comments about Alex Cora last week. In case you forgot, Verdugo was traded to the New York Yankees earlier this month.
“I’m very, very excited to work with Aaron (Boone),” Verdugo said. “I’ve seen the way he has his players’ backs, that’s one thing I want to see out of my head coach. I want to see some fire, some fight for the guys. I think, just instead of airing people out, have their backs.”
The interview made the rounds online sparking controversy, and Papelbon responded on behalf of Cora the only way this World Series Champion knows how.
“Verdugo I mean Vertigo is a B*tch,” he said over Twitter. “Cora has his players and teammates backs more than anyone in the game. You aired yourself out by being late, lazy, and unproductive. If I played for Cora I’m drilling this bitch, just saying.”
Aftermath:
I hope Verdugo does well in New York and I’ll miss him on this team to some degree. I always enjoyed seeing him play and was a big fan of his.
Nevertheless, saying what he said has made him public enemy No. 1. Expectations will be high for him in New York, and for the Yankees’ sake, it lights a fire in Verdugo.
In fact, Verdugo has had high expectations throughout his entire career, given his circumstances. At the same time, his tenure in Boston for many fans was underwhelming, and it’s hard for anyone to replace a former MVP’s production let alone in a place like Boston.
Altogether, It is not a good look for him to antagonize Cora like he did. Maybe this is the end of a turbulent relationship between Alex Verdugo and the Red Sox or maybe it’s just the start of something more? Who knows.
I love Papelbon’s antics in his post-baseball life his presence is good for baseball. I want players on my team with the same passion as Papelbon. Going to bat for their people like it’s their own family. This Red Sox organization has to have that chip on its shoulders that they have evidently lost.
Hopefully, with the dawn of a new year, the Red Sox can address issues with solutions. Overall, I didn’t see anything wrong with Papelbon’s response and sticking up for his guy. That’s what being a good teammate is all about. I think this is great.
