Do you think Johnny Manziel watched film during his NFL career? If you were one of the few that said yes, you are wildly mistaken.
Manziel had one of the craziest athletic careers in the history of sports. The former Texas A&M superstar quarterback is one of the most interesting figures in professional sports. After the release of his Netflix documentary, Untold: Johnny Football, we have some insight into some of the craziest aspects of his career. One of the wildest things we learned was that he watched literally no film.
All quotes from Sports Illustrated and Pro Football Talk.
“(The Browns GM) is calling me going, ‘he doesn’t watch tape.'” Manziel’s former agent Erik Burkhardt said.
“Well, he’s gotta watch some tape,” Burkhardt replied. The response: “His iPad hours is zero point zero, zero.”
Manziel replied simply by saying, “Zero.”
It is truly astounding that Manziel managed to watch zero hours of film. I wonder if he even knew how to work the iPad. We all know that Manziel loved to indulge in non-football-related activities, and the documentary discussed those endeavors as well.
Zero hours is almost hard to accomplish, however. That means he did not even care to pretend to watch film. He could have let the iPad run while he slept or he could have paid someone to watch. Man, zero hours is the definition of not caring at all.
That said, should this be a surprise? Considering everything we know about Johnny Manziel we should not be shocked that he did not bother to watch film.
In hindsight, it is not a shock that Manziel did not pan out in the league. At Texas A&M, he was electric, but it was never going to work out in the NFL. If it did, watching film would have been a crucial part of developing into an NFL-caliber quarterback.
It is almost a shame that the Browns selected Manziel in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft. The Heisman Trophy winner had a slim chance of finding NFL success, but the pressure of being a first-rounder certainly did not help the situation.
