John Metchie III Reveals Leukemia Diagnosis, Will Likely Miss Entire 2022 Season

In extremely tragic and unfortunate news, John Metchie III, Texans rookie receiver, will likely be sitting out the entirety of the 2022 NFL season. At first it seemed like it may have been due to his torn ACL from the SEC title game, however it turned out to be far more serious than that. The Alabama product has been diagnosed with leukemia and will likely not be able to play football this year.

In a statement released by the Texans, Metchie revealed he was diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia, the most curable form of the disease. However, he will likely have to miss his rookie season in the NFL.

Metchie seems to have taken it well and maintains that he is “in good spirits” despite the tough circumstances. For a player that has so much talented and was just recovering from another long-term injury, you have to feel for him.

With 155 total receptions at Alabama, Metchie ranked seventh in the entire program’s history and was widely regarded as a receiver with a very bright future. He was set to be a starter on the Texans depth chart, and he surely had the chance to shine in a team whose offensive roles were wide open besides Brandin Cooks.

Although it is a major setback, Metchie feels confident in his full recovery which gives hope that he will be ready to tear it up at the start of the 2023 season. He deserves all the respect in the world for how he’s taken this and accepted the challenge to fight back. Hopefully, Metchie has an extremely successful and speedy recovery so he can get back to doing what he loves ASAP.
